If you’re anything like me, then you love those stone-style bathrooms with the walk in showers and the stone tiles. It’s definitely my idea of heaven to get one of those ultra-modern bathrooms in my home (even if we do live in a Victorian terrace!). There are several ways that you can improve your bathroom without going to the huge expense of bringing in a decorator: you can do it all yourself. It’s not that hard to make a few changes to bring your bathroom into the 21st century. Here’s what we did in our bathroom.
Updated the Tiles
The tiles that we had in our home were ok, but nothing to call home about. Changing the tiles was really easy. First, we used a grout remover to take off the existing tiles. You need to use a heavy-duty one for a large job like this. Otherwise, it will take you ages to remove the tiles and you’ll be at risk of carpal tunnel syndrome from all that shaking. Then, you need to mix the grout – and for goodness sake, make sure that you pay attention to the instructions!
My most important piece of advice though, is to use a special bathroom caulk to seal the corners between where the two planes of tiles meet. The caulk must be flexible and we recommend using white because it looks better than the see through stuff. You should also caulk where the tiles meet the bath, shower or sink. You have to caulk the corner from top to bottom, and all around the bath shower. You do this because houses move and that can crack the grout. Caulk is flexible, so it doesn’t break.
Choose the stone-looking tiles. They look amazing. But, that’s just our opinion!
Change the Radiator
Next, you need to change the radiators. In bathrooms, the stainless steel and chrome towel radiators are by far the best choice. They just look better, especially the stainless steel ones. We recommend buying either the stainless steel or chrome towel radiators that stand on the floor and arch over. They are the latest in bathroom trends and they look amazing. However, they do have a Victorian look about them, so they probably work better in older properties, such as ours. It’s definitely a style worth considering, wherever you are. However, even if you don’t buy such a unit, you should still buy a towel radiator as opposed to a traditional radiator. They look better and they’re very practical. You can find some really cool designs on the market, too.
Repaint
There’s no point changing the radiator and retiling if you’re only going to keep the old paintwork. A lick of paint can make a huge difference to any room, but this is especially the case in bathrooms. White ceilings and walls work best, in my opinion, because that allows for the tiles and designer radiators to shine.
Finishing Touches
Finally, you should add a few finishing touches. A plant or two can add something great to the atmosphere so can a few pictures.
